As a lifelong teacher and having over 35 years of teaching golf full time, one of the sticky points in many of my lessons was the footwear my student were wearing. They were either wearing jogging or walking shoes that were either too high in the heel or too low in the toes, which caused them to lose their balance and react adversely to that imbalance condition, causing them to have issues with direction and contact. So I would instruct them to remove the shoes, and since we were on mats, there were no problems being in socks or bare feet, and their golf shots immediately improved.
